It feels auspicious to launch this blog on National Bird Day (Jan. 5, 2025). While I’ve always had a fondness for birds (ask about my childhood chickens!), it took buying a (used) “real camera” in March 2024 to take birding more seriously. Almost a year later, I’m still a beginner. More than once, for instance, a distant hawk is revealed to be… a street lamp, usually.
There’s a secret to birdwatching, though: finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. This winter, I’ve seen buffleheads, American black ducks, gadwalls, ring-necked ducks, and common mergansers–many for the first time. Most of these sightings are at Tibbetts Brook Park, a place I’ve visited for years.
I hope this blog can be a resource for beginning birders interested in enhancing their connection to the natural world. I’m looking forward to creating resources around finding trapped or injured wildlife, recommended birding books and podcasts, and more. So, welcome and happy reading! I’m so glad you’re here.
